Tom and Carla

My Engagement at Graceland
Tom and Carla Schlieske have been life-long Elvis fans and tell the story of their engagement here at Elvis Presley's Graceland.

My sister Andrea had just given birth to twin baby girls in Kentucky (Go Mia and Téa!!). Tom and I had always wanted to visit Elvis' Graceland so we decided to make it one big trip to see Elvis and Andrea. We drove 8 1/2 hours down to Memphis and toured Elvis' mansion.

Very cool. It was so neat to see where Elvis entertained and Lisa Marie frolicked about. We were in one of the many Elvis gift shops and Tom brought to my attention a HUGE pink heart costume diamond ring and asked if I liked it.

I laughed and said, "Yeaaah right."

So after the tour of the house, we went into the back yard to the Meditation Garden and stopped into this little gazebo with a wishing well underneath. It was cold out but oh-so-sunny. A beautiful day and no one was around. I was snapping pictures left and right and when I turned around, Tom was on his knee with a little red box...(GASP)...and guess what was in the box? The goofy pink heart ring from earlier.

"Murrry Me" he says in his best Elvis accent.

Then Tom shows me his pinky finger and pulls off the REAL THING!

"Will you marry me?"

"YES!!!!!!!" Wooo hoo!

Tom had my ring on his pinky finger the whole tour and I never noticed! Now that I look back at our Graceland photos, I can see him hiding his hand in many and I even see it peeking out in some. When we finished our tour, we received the picture that they took of us at the start. It is us superimposed on the front gates of Graceland. Tom's hand is on mine and the ring is blatantly displayed.

Then this older couple came up and congratulated us and snapped our photo. They've been married for 45 years and wished us all the best.

Check out the stained glass artwork Tom's brother hand made for us for our wedding day. Jason was our best man and presented it to us during his speech. It's a replica of one of the stained glass windows from the Meditation Gardens at Graceland. We even have decorated our home in Elvis!

Long live the king!
