November 07, 2012

On November 8, 1957, Elvis' third motion picture opened nationwide becoming one of most notable films of our time. "Jailhouse Rock" peaked at #3 in the charts and #14 for the year. This film is considered to be one of Elvis’ best acting performances and the production number in the film is recognized as one of the first rock music videos. By 1969, its earnings in the U.S. and Canada were roughly comparable with those of “The Wizard of Oz.” In 2004, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. The film's soundtrack was co-produced by rock 'n' roll songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Stoller, a featured guest during
Elvis Week 2012, shared his story of how the film's title song "Jailhouse Rock" came about in a New York City hotel room, after being confronted about the material. The "Jailhouse Rock" musical number has come to be known as one of Elvis' most memorable performances. In celebration of the 55th anniversary of its release nationwide, we've added five photos of Elvis filming "Jailhouse Rock" to our
