1/10/2010

Two of Lisa Marie’s children, Benjamin and Riley, prepare to cut Elvis’ five-tiered birthday cake with the help of five children from different non-profits the Presley’s support including MIFA’s Presley Place, Little Kids Rock, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Thousands of fans from across the globe gathered at Graceland in Memphis to celebrate Elvis Presley’s 75th birthday on a cold but festive winter weekend in the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The year-long celebration kicked off Thursday night, January 7, 2010 with the Official Elvis Insiders Fan Club Reception at Graceland Plaza. Over 700 fans packed in to shops, restaurants and exhibit areas of Graceland as a sellout crowd of Elvis Insiders enjoyed a special evening tour of Graceland decorated for the holidays. Elvis’ Imperials along with Annie Helm, Gavin Koon and Robin Koon, who co-starred with Elvis in Follow That Dream, and Frank Hyland, author of Elvis: A Tribute to The King of Rock 'n Roll, made fans happy by signing photos and autographing books, movie memorabilia and more. Also enjoyed were trivia games with prizes, food, special Elvis exhibits, and a chance for Insiders to catch up and share their favorite Elvis stories.

On the morning of January 8th, Priscilla Presley appeared on NBC's The Today Show in a LIVE interview with Matt Lauer speaking about the 75th birthday celebration and Graceland's new exhibits.  Later, Priscilla joined over 3,000 fans along with daughter Lisa Marie Presley in wishing Elvis a Happy Birthday, despite temperatures in the teens and a wind-chill of zero and below. Memphis Mayor A C Wharton declared January 8, 2010, Elvis Presley Day in Memphis. Click here to read the poetic City of Memphis & Shelby County Elvis Presley Day Proclamation. Tennessee’s 9th District Representative in Congress, Steve Cohen, also presented the Presley family with a Congressional Proclamation of Elvis Presley Day. Two of Lisa Marie’s children, Benjamin and Riley, cut Elvis’ five-tiered birthday cake with the help of five children from different non-profits the Presley’s support - MIFA’s Presley Place, Little Kids Rock, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. With over 20,000 votes cast, master cake makers Lori and Pam of Cakes by Mom and Me in eastern Arkansas won the online contest on elvis.com to create a cake fit for the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

Elvis’ birthday was also celebrated with the opening of two special exhibits at Graceland as part of the VIP Tour. The special birthday exhibit focuses on Elvis’ life beginning with his birth in 1935, following him through high school graduation and his last few days as a delivery truck drive for Crown Electric before stepping into the spotlight and becoming an international singing sensation. The exhibit, titled “From Tupelo to Memphis,” gives fans a glimpse at rarely seen artifacts such as photos of Elvis from his childhood, report cards, a crayon box and one of Elvis’ first pay stubs from his days as a delivery truck driver before making his first recording at Sun Studio on July 5, 1954.

Also opening on Elvis’ birthday was a special exhibit featuring Elvis’ iconic stage costumes from 1969-1977 as showcased by Prisiclla Presley in an inteview with Entertainment Tonight. This charts the evolution of the design of Elvis' stage-wear, popularized during his Las Vegas engagements and concert tours. Inspired by Elvis' great interest in karate, simple wool gabardine suits were engineered with tunic-style tops and long, karate-style belts knotted to one side with the ends dangling from the hip. More than 20 of these costumes, now considered works of art, will be on display in this special exhibit that is included in the VIP Tour at Graceland.

Fans continued to celebrate Friday night, January 8th, 2010, at the FedEx Forum with the Memphis Grizzlies in an NBA Salute to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The Grizzlies played the Utah Jazz as the sounds of Elvis music filled the arena. Spectators were even encouraged to show some love for the person sitting next to them if spotted on the “Love Me Tender Kiss Cam” and the King’s of the Court amazed fans with their high flying Elvis approach to acrobatic basketball dunks. In typical Elvis style, the Grizzlies came up winners on Elvis Night in rockstar style.

For those who didn’t make the NBA’s salute to Elvis, Elvis music turned night to day at the Elvis Presley Birthday Dance Party, a private party with fellow Elvis fans that went to the wee hours of the morning at the official host hotel for Elvis Presley’s 75th Birthday celebration, the Memphis Marriott East.

The Marriott also played host to the annual Fan Club Presidents' Event as independent Elvis fan clubs from around the world and other Elvis fans gathered to learn about the amazing work that fan clubs do to promote Elvis' legacy. They also were able to hear an update from Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. on what fans can expect in the future. Then, special guest Marlyn Mason, who co-starred with Elvis in the 1969 movie The Trouble with Girls, took the stage for a special Q&A. Moderated by Sirius XM Elvis Radio DJ Argo, she shared some of her favorite memories of filming with Elvis.

Following the Fan Club Presidents Event at the Memphis Marriott East was Conversations on Elvis, hosted by Tupelo historian Roy Turner. Special guests for Conversations included Barbara Hearn-Smith, who met Elvis in 1954, later dated him and spent time with him whenever he was home in Memphis. Barbara traveled with Elvis to his performance at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo in 1956. Another special guest, Guy Harris, was a lifelong friend of Elvis who grew up with him in Tupelo. Guy's mother and Gladys Presley were best friends. Also appearing was Sam Bell, who was a friend of Elvis in Tupelo. The event, full of rarely heard stories, also featured rarely-seen photos and video of Elvis from his time in Tupelo.

Beale Street is a place where Elvis soaked up the blues and soul of Memphis music that influenced his performance style, and the famous street and clubs welcomed Elvis fans from around the world as they celebrated the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s 75th with an Elvis Presley Beale Street Birthday Bash. Many of the clubs included Elvis-themed entertainment, drink specials and more.

As Beale Street filled with fans, Elvis also returned to the Cannon Center to celebrate the king’s landmark 75th birthday in style with The Memphis Symphony Orchestra Elvis Pops Concert conducted by Steven Reineke. Special guests were Terry Mike Jeffery, his band and James Burton, Ronnie Tutt and Glen D Hardin of The TCB Band. The program featured fan favorites and additional selections that even Elvis himself never performed on stage such as "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" and "Any Day Now."

Wrapping up a busy extended weekend full of Elvis Presley 75th Birthday events was the Southern Gospel Celebration at Graceland. Elvis' Imperials played to a sold out crowd and Andy Childs joined the group for a live concert filled with Elvis’ favorite gospel numbers.
